NCT ID NCT05770375
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-stage trial is testing whether the drug MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy) is safe and tolerable for people with schizophrenia. The goal is to see if it can help with social withdrawal, a common and hard-to-treat symptom. Twenty stable participants will receive three different doses in order, and researchers will monitor for any worsening of psychotic symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MDMA (a psychoactive drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment for social withdrawal in schizophrenia, a symptom that current medications don't help.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small trial (20 people) just checking safety. It may not work, and MDMA could worsen psychotic symptoms in some people.
