New study tests safer pain relief after breast cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT06789146
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two types of nerve blocks—serratus posterior superior intercostal plane block and thoracic paravertebral block—for pain relief after mastectomy. Sixty women received one of the blocks along with standard painkillers. Researchers measured pain scores and opioid use over 24 hours to see which block worked better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer opioids after mastectomy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 60 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and nerve blocks carry rare risks like infection or bleeding.
