Massage showdown: hands vs. tool for heel pain relief

NCT ID NCT07576192

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compares two types of massage—deep friction massage by hand and a tool-assisted technique—for treating plantar fasciitis, a common cause of heel pain. Fifty-two adults with moderate pain will receive 12 sessions over six weeks. Researchers will measure changes in pain, foot function, and walking ability to see which approach works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

deep transverse friction massage and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show which hands-on therapy works better for reducing pain and improving daily function in plantar fasciitis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 52 people, so results may not apply to everyone. It compares two similar techniques, so any difference may be small.
