Scientists bite back: testing malaria infection with live mosquitoes

NCT ID NCT07257965

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study aims to find the smallest number of infected mosquito bites needed to give healthy adults malaria. Twenty-four volunteers will be bitten by 1, 2, or 3 mosquitoes carrying the Plasmodium vivax parasite. The results will help researchers develop better ways to test future malaria vaccines in real-world settings.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mosquito bite with Plasmodium vivax parasites

What this could lead to

If successful, this could create a safer and more accurate way to test malaria vaccines in people who are most at risk.

What could go wrong

This is a very early study with only 24 healthy adults, so results may not apply to everyone. Participants will be intentionally infected with malaria, which carries risks like fever and illness.
