At-Home HPV test could help underserved women skip the clinic
NCT ID NCT03898167
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether mailing HPV self-test kits to women who are overdue for cervical cancer screening could increase participation. Over 2,400 underserved women in Texas were randomly assigned to receive a kit or standard phone reminders. The goal was to see if the at-home option made it easier for women to get screened, especially those who face barriers to clinic visits.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mailed HPV self-sampling kit
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could make cervical cancer screening more accessible for women who struggle to get to a clinic, potentially catching more cancers early.
What could go wrong
This is a completed study, but it only looked at whether women would use the kit and follow up. It does not prove that self-sampling reduces cancer deaths or works in all populations.
