Ultrasound and dye reveal hidden lymphatic highways in breast cancer

NCT ID NCT07677839

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study uses ultra-high frequency ultrasound (UHFUS) and a green dye to map lymphatic channels in the arms of breast cancer patients scheduled for lymph node surgery. The goal is to better understand normal lymphatic anatomy, which could help reduce the risk of lymphedema (arm swelling) after treatment. Fifty adults with breast cancer will have the dye injected into their hands and wrists, then undergo imaging to measure vessel size and wall thickness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Indocyanine green (ICG) dye

What this could lead to

If successful, this could improve understanding of normal lymphatic anatomy, potentially helping to prevent or better manage lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 50 participants, so findings may not apply to all patients. The imaging technique is exploratory and not yet proven to change outcomes.
