Breathing in a new view: lung MRI study aims to see inside without X-Rays
NCT ID NCT02740868
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing two new types of lung MRI that use special gases (xenon and perfluoropropane) to create detailed images of lung function. Researchers will compare these scans in 30 people with cystic fibrosis, asthma, and healthy volunteers to see if they can spot lung problems earlier and more clearly than standard tests. The goal is to develop a safer, radiation-free way to monitor lung disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Xenon-129 and perfluoropropane gas (inhaled)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a new, radiation-free way to monitor lung disease in children and adults with cystic fibrosis or asthma.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The new MRI methods may not prove better than existing tests.
