Xenon gas MRI could revolutionize lung scans

NCT ID NCT02316379

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study is testing a special type of MRI that uses hyperpolarized xenon gas to create detailed images of lung function. Researchers want to see how well this method works in 100 healthy adults. Participants will inhale the gas and hold their breath for up to 16 seconds during the scan. The goal is to improve how doctors measure lung health without using radiation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Hyperpolarized 129 Xenon gas

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a better, non-invasive way to image lung function, helping doctors diagnose and monitor respiratory diseases more accurately.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase study focused on calibration in healthy adults, not on treating a disease. It may not translate to better patient outcomes or work in people with lung conditions.
