New cocktail of drugs takes on tough lung cancers in Never-Smokers

NCT ID NCT03786692

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether adding the immunotherapy drug atezolizumab to a standard three-drug chemotherapy regimen (carboplatin, pemetrexed, and bevacizumab) helps people with advanced non-squamous lung cancer live longer without their disease worsening. The study enrolls 107 patients whose tumors either have a specific EGFR mutation or who have never smoked and lack certain other mutations. Researchers are comparing the combination with and without atezolizumab to see if the immune-boosting agent improves outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Carboplatin, pemetrexed, bevacizumab, and atezolizumab (drug combination)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a more effective first-line treatment for certain advanced lung cancers, potentially improving how long patients live without their disease getting worse.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with only 107 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Adding immunotherapy to chemotherapy also raises the risk of immune-related side effects, and the benefit over standard treatment is not yet proven.
