New test may predict lung cancer treatment success

NCT ID NCT04589013

First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study tested whether a combination of 6 markers from tumor tissue could predict how well patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer respond to first-line treatment with pembrolizumab (immunotherapy) plus chemotherapy. Researchers analyzed tissue samples from 106 patients before treatment and tracked disease progression or death over one year. The goal was to see if this multiparametric test outperforms the standard PD-L1 test alone in predicting outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this test could help doctors identify which lung cancer patients are most likely to benefit from immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy, avoiding ineffective treatments.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study that only looked at predicting outcomes, not changing treatment. The test may not be accurate enough for routine use and needs further validation.
