Could a simple dialysis tweak lower blood pressure?
NCT ID NCT07459348
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether using a lower-sodium dialysis fluid can improve blood pressure and blood vessel function in people with kidney failure on hemodialysis. Twenty-five participants will each receive both a low-sodium and a standard-sodium dialysis for three weeks, in random order, acting as their own control. The main goal is to see if the lower-sodium fluid reduces 24-hour blood pressure and improves symptoms like thirst and fatigue.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Low-sodium dialysate (133 mmol/L) compared to standard-sodium dialysate (139 mmol/L)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, cost-effective way to improve blood pressure and reduce symptoms like thirst and fatigue for people on dialysis.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study with only 25 participants. Lowering sodium too much can cause dizziness, cramps, and low blood pressure during treatment.
