New study tests if a lower dose of a stronger blood thinner can prevent heart attacks during stent procedures
NCT ID NCT06228456
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two blood thinners—low-dose ticagrelor and standard clopidogrel—in 50 stable heart disease patients getting a stent. The goal is to see which drug better prevents blood clots around the time of the procedure. Participants take the assigned drug plus aspirin for about 30 days, and researchers measure platelet activity to determine effectiveness.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ticagrelor (Brilinta) and clopidogrel (Plavix)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that low-dose ticagrelor is a better option than clopidogrel for preventing heart attacks during stent procedures in certain patients.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefit may be small or not seen at all, and ticagrelor can cause bleeding or shortness of breath.
