Wound infection breakthrough? local antibiotics may offer extra protection
NCT ID NCT07478874
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether giving antibiotics directly into the surgical wound, in addition to standard IV antibiotics, reduces the chance of infection after elective surgeries like hernia repair or gallbladder removal. 284 adults took part, with one group receiving only IV cefazolin and the other receiving IV cefazolin plus local gentamicin injected into the wound. The goal was to see if the combination approach lowers the rate of surgical site infections within 30 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cefazolin and gentamicin
What this could lead to
If adding local antibiotics works better, it could become a simple, low-cost way to prevent wound infections after common surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with 284 patients, so results may not apply to all surgeries or patients. The study is completed but not published in a major journal, so evidence is limited.
