Liver clot mystery: new study probes why cirrhosis patients develop dangerous blockages
NCT ID NCT07439939
First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 9 times
Summary
This study looks at why people with liver cirrhosis sometimes develop blood clots in the portal vein (the main vein to the liver). Researchers will compare blood clotting activity in the general bloodstream versus directly in the liver's portal vein during a routine procedure called TIPS. The goal is to better understand the causes of these clots, not to test a new treatment. About 45 adults with cirrhosis scheduled for TIPS will participate.
