Could BCG and MMR vaccines tame COPD inflammation?

NCT ID NCT06257212

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving live vaccines (BCG and MMR) to people with COPD can train their immune system to produce less harmful inflammation. Sixty adults with COPD received either the vaccines or a placebo. Researchers measured changes in immune cell activity over four months to see if the vaccines could reduce systemic inflammation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

BCG vaccine (Danish strain 1331) and MMR vaccine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to reduce harmful inflammation in COPD using existing vaccines.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply widely. The vaccines also carry risks like allergic reactions or fever.
