Could a thyroid hormone boost heart transplant success?
NCT ID NCT06428097
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether giving levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone, right after a heart transplant helps the new heart work better and reduces complications. Adults listed for heart transplant will be randomly assigned to receive levothyroxine or a placebo (saline) during the first hours after surgery. Researchers will measure how much blood pressure support patients need and whether they experience early graft dysfunction, comparing the two groups.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone, given intravenously after heart transplant surgery
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could improve recovery and survival after heart transplant by reducing the need for blood pressure support and lowering the risk of early graft dysfunction.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase, single-center trial, so results may not apply broadly. Levothyroxine may not improve outcomes and could carry risks, especially in people with thyroid conditions.
