New handheld scanner could help surgeons see skin cancer edges without cutting
NCT ID NCT07182240
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study is testing a handheld imaging device called LC-OCT to see if it can clearly show the edges of basal cell skin cancers before Mohs surgery. Researchers will enroll 60 adults who are already scheduled for Mohs surgery. The goal is to find out if the images are good enough to help surgeons plan the first cut, potentially reducing the number of tissue layers removed.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
LC-OCT imaging device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give surgeons a noninvasive way to see skin cancer borders before surgery, potentially reducing the number of cuts needed.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The imaging might not be clear enough to replace current methods.
