Laser vs. scalpel: which is better for gum surgery in braces patients?
NCT ID NCT07263763
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested two ways to remove extra gum tissue (gingival hyperplasia) in people with braces: using a surgical scalpel or a diode laser. Thirteen adults with fixed braces and gum overgrowth took part. The goal was to see which method led to better healing, less pain, and improved gum health. Results will help dentists choose the best technique.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
diode laser
What this could lead to
If laser works better, it could become the preferred method for gum surgery in people with braces, offering less bleeding and faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a very small study (13 people) that is already completed, so results may not apply to everyone. Lasers may not be better than scalpel for all patients.
