Laser light shows promise for treating advanced gum disease
NCT ID NCT06426550
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding laser therapy to standard deep cleaning improves gum health in people with severe periodontitis. Twenty adults received either antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (using a blue dye and laser) or photobiomodulation (red or infrared laser) alongside standard scaling and root planing. Researchers measured plaque, bleeding, pocket depth, and gum recession at the start and three months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antimicrobial photodynamic therapy with methylene blue and photobiomodulation with red or infrared laser
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a more effective way to treat severe gum disease by combining standard cleaning with laser therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, completed study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The laser treatments are add-ons to standard care, not a standalone cure.
