Nerve rerouting helps paralyzed vocal cords: small study shows promise
NCT ID NCT02400008
First seen Jan 25, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study tested a nerve surgery in 4 adults with bilateral vocal fold paralysis (both vocal cords stuck closed) who had not improved with prior endoscopic treatment. The surgery rerouted nerves to restore movement to the vocal cords. After 6-9 months, improvements in voice and breathing were expected, with no swallowing problems. The goal was to improve quality of life without needing lifelong medication.
