Keyhole vs open surgery for colon cancer: which is better?
NCT ID NCT05713903
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to open surgery for removing the right side of the colon in people with right colon cancer. Both methods follow a precise technique called complete mesocolic excision (CME) to ensure thorough removal. The trial will enroll 114 adults aged 18-90 and measure how well each surgery removes the cancer, as well as recovery and complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Laparoscopic right colectomy or open right colectomy, both following complete mesocolic excision (CME) principles
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that laparoscopic surgery is as effective as open surgery for removing right colon cancer, potentially leading to less invasive treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (114 participants) and results may not apply to all patients. The study focuses on surgical technique quality, not long-term survival, so benefits may be limited.
