Could a tiny hole in the heart prevent heart failure after valve surgery?

NCT ID NCT06547788

First seen May 13, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study looks at whether making a small opening between the upper chambers of the heart during mitral valve surgery can help prevent heart failure symptoms after the operation. The trial will include 50 adults with severe mitral regurgitation (a leaky heart valve) who are scheduled for surgery. Half will get the standard surgery alone, and half will get the standard surgery plus the extra opening. Researchers will compare how well each group recovers and whether they have fewer heart failure symptoms.
