Can a special yogurt boost iron in gestational diabetes?

NCT ID NCT07287384

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested whether a yogurt enriched with lactoferrin, a protein found in milk, could improve iron levels in 50 women with gestational diabetes. Half ate the special yogurt twice a day for two months, while the other half ate regular yogurt. The main goal was to see if the lactoferrin yogurt raised ferritin, a marker of iron stores, more than the plain yogurt.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lactoferrin-enriched yogurt

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help manage iron status in women with gestational diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 50 participants, so results may not be generalizable. The change in iron levels may be small or not clinically meaningful.
