New myeloma cocktail aims to outperform current standard
NCT ID NCT03729804
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether a newer three-drug combination (carfilzomib, lenalidomide, dexamethasone, or KRd) works better than the current standard (bortezomib, lenalidomide, dexamethasone, or VRd) for people newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma. About 250 participants will receive one of the two combos. The main goal is to see which group lives longer without their cancer progressing.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Carfilzomib (Kyprolis), lenalidomide (Revlimid), and dexamethasone (KRd) versus bortezomib (Velcade), lenalidomide, and dexamethasone (VRd)
What this could lead to
If KRd works better, it could become a new standard first treatment for multiple myeloma, helping patients live longer without their cancer getting worse.
What could go wrong
This is a late-stage trial, but results are not yet final. The newer combo may not prove superior, and both regimens have side effects like fatigue, low blood counts, and nerve damage.
