Blood test strategy aims to curb dangerous antibiotic overuse in hospitals

NCT ID NCT07211620

Summary

This study is testing if tracking how a blood marker called procalcitonin changes over time is better than using a single high reading to decide when to start antibiotics in intensive care patients with a suspected infection. It aims to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions, which can cause side effects and fuel drug-resistant superbugs. The trial will compare the safety and effectiveness of these two decision-making methods in 250 critically ill but stable patients.
