Blood test showdown: can a simple change cut unnecessary antibiotics in the ICU?

NCT ID NCT07211620

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 07, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether looking at how a blood marker (procalcitonin) changes over time is better than a single measurement for deciding when to start antibiotics in critically ill patients. About 250 adults in the ICU with a suspected infection will be randomly assigned to one of two approaches. The goal is to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use while keeping patients safe.
