Blood marker may spot hidden fungal infections in ICU patients
NCT ID NCT03140748
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether a substance called β-D-glucan in the blood can help identify and track fungal infections in the abdomen (peritonitis) in intensive care patients. Researchers measured levels in 70 adults with peritonitis, comparing those with and without Candida yeast. The goal was to see if this blood test could aid diagnosis and monitor treatment response.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that measuring β-D-glucan in the blood helps doctors diagnose and monitor fungal peritonitis, potentially improving treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, observational study with only 70 participants. It does not test a treatment, so it may not lead to any direct patient benefit.
