Simple blood test could spot kidney transplant problems sooner
NCT ID NCT06026592
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study is testing a new blood test that looks for kidney-specific DNA to detect injury or rejection after a kidney transplant. Researchers will measure these DNA markers before and after surgery in 30 patients with end-stage kidney disease. The goal is to see if the test can tell the difference between signals from the patient's own failed kidneys and the new transplanted kidney, which could lead to better monitoring of transplant health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
blood test for kidney-specific DNA markers
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to detect kidney transplant rejection earlier and more accurately than current methods.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study with only 30 participants. The test may not prove reliable enough for routine use, and results may not apply to all transplant patients.
