Side vs. back: new study aims to settle best position for kidney stone removal

NCT ID NCT07310966

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two positions—lying on your back (lithotomy) versus lying on your side (lateral)—during a minimally invasive surgery for kidney stones smaller than 2 cm. The goal is to see which position helps clear stones more completely. Seventy adults with lower calyx kidney stones will be randomly assigned to one of the two positions, and doctors will measure stone-free rates, surgery time, and complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Procedure: patient positioning during surgery

What this could lead to

If one position works better, it could become the new standard for removing lower kidney stones, making surgery more effective.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The difference between positions might be small or none.
