Can cilastatin shield kidneys during ovarian cancer surgery?

NCT ID NCT07229040

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two drugs, cilastatin and thiosulfate, for protecting the kidneys in women with ovarian cancer who undergo surgery with heated chemotherapy. About 90 patients will be randomly assigned to receive one of the drugs during the procedure. The main goal is to see which drug better prevents kidney injury in the week after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
cilastatin
What this could lead to
If cilastatin works better, it could offer a safer way to protect kidneys during heated chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a small phase 2 trial, so results may not apply broadly. Also, both drugs have risks, and the study is only comparing kidney protection, not curing the cancer.
