Can a diuretic shield kidneys from contrast dye in heart failure?
NCT ID NCT07550790
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving a diuretic (furosemide) to reduce fluid buildup can better protect the kidneys from contrast dye damage compared to standard IV fluids. It involves 190 adults hospitalized with acute heart failure and moderate kidney problems who need a CT scan. Researchers will measure kidney function before and after the scan to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Furosemide and normal saline
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show a better way to protect kidneys during contrast scans in heart failure patients, reducing the risk of acute kidney injury.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (190 participants) testing a strategy, not a new drug. The results may not apply to all patients, and the decongestion approach could cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalances.
