Hope for RA patients: drug may heal bone erosion
NCT ID NCT05955066
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether baricitinib, a JAK inhibitor, can heal bone erosion in people with active rheumatoid arthritis. Sixty adults with moderate-to-severe RA and at least one bone erosion will receive either baricitinib or a placebo for 24 weeks. The main goal is to see if the drug reduces erosion size, measured by a special CT scan.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Baricitinib (Olumiant) 4 mg daily
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that JAK inhibitors help repair bone damage in rheumatoid arthritis, potentially leading to better long-term joint health.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment may not heal bone erosion, and JAK inhibitors carry risks like infections and blood clots.
