Could a simple pill replace the IV drip for ER infections?
NCT ID NCT06715306
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving oral antibiotics instead of IV antibiotics is just as safe and effective for patients with common infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and cellulitis. About 4,000 adults in Danish emergency rooms will be randomly assigned to start oral antibiotics right away or continue with IV treatment. The goal is to see if oral treatment can keep patients healthy and out of the hospital just as well as IV, potentially allowing many to go home sooner.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oral antibiotics
What this could lead to
If oral antibiotics work as well as IV, many patients could be treated at home or discharged sooner, saving hospital resources and reducing time away from home.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but still testing whether oral antibiotics are safe and effective enough for patients who would normally get IV. Some patients may need IV if oral fails or causes side effects.
