Stomach drug may speed up digestion for semaglutide users before surgery
NCT ID NCT07254715
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 4 trial tests whether itopride, a drug that helps move food through the stomach, can reduce the risk of aspiration during anesthesia in people taking semaglutide. Sixty diabetic patients scheduled for hysterectomy will receive itopride or a placebo for 7 days before surgery. The main goal is to see if itopride lowers leftover stomach contents after fasting.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Itopride (a drug that helps move food through the stomach)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple way to reduce stomach contents before surgery for people on semaglutide, lowering aspiration risk.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to all patients, and itopride may not significantly improve gastric emptying.
