Can a simple blood test predict which pancreatic cysts turn cancerous?
NCT ID NCT06574373
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study is looking for biological markers in the blood and tissue that can tell apart harmless pancreatic cysts (IPMN) from those that are likely to turn into pancreatic cancer. Researchers will follow 3,600 patients with IPMN across four Italian hospitals, collecting blood samples and analyzing tissue from those who have surgery. The goal is to improve how doctors decide who needs surgery and who can be safely watched, reducing unnecessary procedures and catching cancer earlier.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to better tests to identify which IPMN patients need surgery and which can be safely monitored, potentially preventing pancreatic cancer deaths.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find reliable biomarkers, and any new tests would need further validation before changing patient care.
