Immune boosting duo takes on rare throat cancer
NCT ID NCT03097939
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase II trial tests whether combining two immunotherapy drugs, ipilimumab and nivolumab, can shrink tumors in people with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) linked to the Epstein-Barr virus. About 113 patients with recurrent or metastatic NPC that can't be cured will receive the drugs every few weeks. The main goal is to see how many patients have their tumors shrink or disappear.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ipilimumab (Yervoy) and Nivolumab (Opdivo)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option for advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, potentially shrinking tumors and delaying disease progression.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage trial with 113 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drugs can cause immune-related side effects, and not all patients may respond.
