Can fasting and exercise tame metabolic syndrome? new saudi trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07181655
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a combination of intermittent fasting (16:8 method), a calorie-restricted diet, and increased physical activity can improve key health markers in adults with metabolic syndrome. Researchers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will enroll 140 participants and measure changes in blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body mass index over the trial period. The goal is to see if this lifestyle approach can help manage the cluster of risk factors that increase the chance of heart disease and diabetes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Intermittent fasting (16:8 method), calorie-restricted diet, and physical activity
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining intermittent fasting, calorie restriction, and exercise is an effective lifestyle approach to manage metabolic syndrome and reduce related health risks.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (140 participants) without a control group receiving standard care, so results may not be generalizable. Adherence to the strict fasting and diet protocols may be challenging, and long-term effects are not assessed.
