First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether a combined infectious disease and substance use disorder clinic can reduce infection-related hospital readmissions. 304 hospitalized adults with opioid or stimulant use disorder and related infections will be randomly assigned to either the integrated clinic or usual care. The integrated clinic offers medication for substance use and infection care in one appointment, either in person or via telemedicine, for at least 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Integrated Infectious Diseases and Substance Use Disorder Clinic (behavioral intervention combining medication and infectious disease care)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this integrated clinic model could reduce infection-related hospital readmissions and improve health outcomes for people with substance use disorders.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage trial (Phase NA) with 304 participants, and the intervention is behavioral, so results may vary across hospitals and may not be widely adopted.
