Clearing the clutter: new study tests home help for hoarding
NCT ID NCT04712474
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding in-home decluttering sessions to group cognitive-behavioral therapy can reduce hoarding severity in adults with hoarding disorder. About 90 participants in Sweden will receive 10 weekly home visits focused on guided decluttering, alongside standard group therapy. The goal is to see if this practical support improves outcomes like difficulty discarding and excessive clutter.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
in-home decluttering practice
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective treatment for hoarding disorder by combining therapy with practical home support.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (90 people) and only tests a behavioral addition to therapy, not a cure. Results may not apply to everyone with hoarding disorder.
