Rural caregivers get a mental health boost: CBT plus extra calls tested

NCT ID NCT07119710

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding two check-in calls per week to standard cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) improves quality of life for adults caring for a family member with dementia in rural Texas. Sixty caregivers will receive either individual CBT for 12-16 weeks or CBT plus the extra calls. The goal is to see if more frequent contact eases grief and mental health struggles.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with or without extra check-in calls

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to boost mental health support for caregivers in rural areas.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so effects may be modest.
