First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 38 times
Summary
This study tested a 6-week coaching program based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills model to help patients with chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure use their home ventilator more consistently. The program included education, motivation, and practical skills training. 124 patients who were not using their ventilator enough took part. The goal was to see if the program could improve how often and how long they used the ventilator each night.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (IMB) model-based intervention
What this could lead to
If successful, this program could help patients with chronic breathing failure use their home ventilator more regularly, potentially reducing hospital visits and improving quality of life.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with 124 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is behavioral, so individual motivation and circumstances may limit its effectiveness.
