New MRI scan could spare thousands from unnecessary stroke surgery
NCT ID NCT07556887
First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new decision-making tool called IMPROVE, which uses an MRI scan to find unstable plaque in the carotid artery. The goal is to see if this method is as good as or better than the current standard (which mainly looks at how narrow the artery is) for deciding who needs surgery or stenting to prevent a stroke. About 613 people who have had a recent minor stroke or TIA and have 30-99% carotid narrowing will take part. Researchers will track strokes, deaths, and costs over several years to see which approach works best.
