New combo therapy aims to fight Hard-to-Treat GIST tumors

NCT ID NCT05152472

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether adding the immunotherapy drug atezolizumab to the standard drug imatinib can help control advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) that have stopped responding to other treatments. About 110 adults with inoperable or metastatic GIST will be randomly assigned to receive either imatinib alone or imatinib plus atezolizumab. The main goal is to see if the combination slows disease progression.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
imatinib and atezolizumab
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with advanced GIST who have run out of standard therapies.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase 2 trial with only 110 participants, so results may not be conclusive. Adding atezolizumab may also increase side effects without improving outcomes.
