Green dye could replace radioactive tracers in breast cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT07146295
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study aims to help Dutch hospitals switch from using a radioactive tracer to a green dye called indocyanine green (ICG) to find the first lymph node that breast cancer may spread to. The dye is given during surgery, avoids radiation, and requires no extra hospital visits. Researchers will roll out the change step-by-step in several hospitals and gather feedback from patients and doctors to create a guide for nationwide use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Indocyanine green (ICG) dye
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make sentinel lymph node biopsy during breast cancer surgery safer, cheaper, and more convenient by replacing radioactive tracers with a dye given during surgery.
What could go wrong
This is an implementation study, not a test of effectiveness. ICG is already known to work as well as the standard method, so the main risk is that hospitals may not adopt it smoothly or that patient feedback reveals issues.
