Dye during thyroid surgery could spare patients from lifelong calcium pills
NCT ID NCT04785443
First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 6 times
Summary
This study tests whether injecting a green dye during total thyroid removal helps surgeons see and protect the parathyroid glands, which control calcium levels. Damage to these glands can cause permanent hypoparathyroidism, requiring lifelong medication. The trial will compare rates of low blood calcium in 242 patients who receive the dye versus those who do not.
