Engineered immune cells with an emergency brake tested in lymphoma

NCT ID NCT03696784

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase study tests a new type of CAR T-cell therapy for people with B-cell lymphoma that has come back or not responded to treatment. The cells are engineered to target and kill cancer cells, but also include a safety switch that can be activated to reduce severe side effects. The main goal is to see if the treatment is safe and to find the best dose.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

iC9-CAR19 T cells (engineered immune cells with a safety switch)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a safer way to use CAR T-cell therapy for B-cell lymphoma, with a built-in off switch to manage severe side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 19 participants, so it is too small to prove effectiveness. The treatment can still cause serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome, and the safety switch may not work as hoped.
