Can a common blood pressure drug better protect the heart?
NCT ID NCT05593055
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two blood pressure medications, eplerenone and chlorthalidone, in 75 adults with high blood pressure and thickened heart muscle. Researchers want to see if eplerenone improves blood flow to the heart and how efficiently the heart uses oxygen. Participants will take one of the two drugs for several weeks, and heart function will be measured using imaging tests.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Eplerenone and Chlorthalidone (with potassium)
- What this could lead to
- If eplerenone works better, it could point to a more effective way to protect the heart in people with high blood pressure and thickened heart muscle.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study (75 people) comparing two existing drugs, so results may not apply to everyone. The study looks at heart function measures, not long-term outcomes like heart attacks.
