Too much oxygen in ICU linked to higher death risk
NCT ID NCT07549763
First seen May 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 6 times
Summary
This study looked at 260 adults in the intensive care unit (ICU) who needed oxygen therapy. Researchers found that about 60% of patients had too much oxygen in their blood (hyperoxemia). Those with hyperoxemia had longer stays in the ICU and hospital, and a much higher chance of dying (82.5% vs 50.4%). The study suggests that carefully adjusting oxygen levels in critically ill patients is very important.
