Can pressurized oxygen clear long COVID brain fog?

NCT ID NCT04647656

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) can improve thinking, memory, and other symptoms in people with long COVID. About 91 adults who have had cognitive problems for at least 3 months after a COVID infection will be randomly assigned to receive either real hyperbaric oxygen or a sham (fake) treatment. The goal is to see if this therapy can help with brain function and related issues like fatigue and sleep problems.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hyperbaric oxygen therapy (breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people struggling with brain fog, fatigue, and other lingering symptoms after COVID-19.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-stage study (91 people) and the sham group also receives mild pressure, so the real benefit may be small or unclear. Hyperbaric oxygen can cause ear or sinus discomfort in some people.
