Can pressurized oxygen boost athletic recovery?

NCT ID NCT07659301

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber after a hard bike ride helps competitive cyclists recover and perform better the next day. Healthy male road cyclists aged 18 to 40 who compete at the national level in Belgium are randomly assigned to different oxygen exposure levels or a sham condition. The main goal is to see if a single session of post-exercise hyperbaric oxygen improves next-day endurance performance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

hyperbaric oxygen

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide evidence for a recovery tool that helps athletes bounce back faster after intense exercise.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study in a specific group of male cyclists, so results may not apply broadly. The effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen for recovery remains unproven.
